ARCH7043 - ‘Tabula Plena’
School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland

In an increasingly globalised world, finding local themes and local relevance seems more important than ever. ARCH7043 asked students to consider a more situated form of practice, looking closely at existing buildings, occupancy, and culture.

Graeme Brooker’s essay ‘Tabula Plena’ was adopted as a defining provocation for the studio, encouraging students to carefully observe and work with existing fabric, mindful of the intricate relationships that govern their project site and its ambit.

ARCH3342 - ‘Occupancy’
School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland

Andrew Wilson’s research elective proposed a ‘deep dive’ into the work of Vokes and Peters. Visits to five completed projects were supplemented with interviews with their occupants, analysis of project drawings and documentation, and a series of lectures presented by Vokes and Peters’ directors and project leads.

ARCH7004 - ‘VP19 - Dwelling and Density’
School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland

South Bank Corporation, established in 1989, has sought to rehabilitate a large swathe of the historic city fabric obliterated by the construction of the 1988 World Expo. A number of the precinct’s assets are now approaching the end of their design life, are overutilised, or are underperforming. In 2018, the Queensland Government announced a new Master Plan for South Bank.

Rapid expansion in inner-city living has dramatically transformed Brisbane’s inner city in the last 30 years. This shift places additional demands upon public spaces to provide amenities for a largely unit-dwelling population. As a result, streets, parkland and other public spaces conceived in the wake of Expo 88 are increasingly out of step with current population density.

VP19 explored dwelling and density within the South Bank precinct, examining how the area might transition from a leisure precinct to a consolidated piece of urban fabric that balances the ‘experience economy’ with the need to become a fully integrated, diverse, and coherent part of the city.

ARCH13 - 216 Architectural Design Studio 6
Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University

Matt Eagle’s S6 studio invited students to critically examine contemporary cultural practices and urban morphology by examining the broader social and cultural role of housing and public buildings in the city, and to prepare speculative studies for the organisation of a masterplan and developed built form.

A major theme of the studio was introducing students to the design methodology of Vokes and Peters. Lectures, readings and project work focused on ideological conviction as a framework for critical practice, specifically: the architect as ‘custodian’ and the use of ‘spatial narrative’ as a critical design technique.

In response to anticipated population growth and urban consolidation concentrated around the Gold Coast’s light rail network, Matt Eagle’s S6 studio invited students to critically examine contemporary cultural practices, urban morphology and the role of the architect in the city by designing a variety of housing typologies and new public infrastructure.

A major theme of the studio was introducing students to the design methodology of Vokes and Peters. Lectures, readings and project work focused on ideological conviction as a framework for critical practice, specifically: the architect as ‘custodian’ and the use of ‘spatial narrative’ as a critical design technique.

ARCH3100 - ‘The Middle Scale’
School of Architecture, The University of Queensland

‘The Middle Scale’ design studio, delivered in partnership with Zuzana and Nicholas, focused on small to low/medium scale multi-residential mixed‐use buildings in the inner city of Brisbane. Students examined contemporary multi‐residential typologies, studying traditional vernacular housing models to identify and diagnose characteristics that might contribute to enduring urban and environmental value.

‘Kids in the City’, delivered in partnership with Matt Eagle, proposed the design of a new junior school campus on the northern periphery of Surfers Paradise.

Students investigated the broader social and cultural role of schools in the city and prepared speculative studies to organise an urban campus model.

ARCH7010 - Architectural Design Studio ‘Short Stories from Suburbia’
School of Architecture, The University of Queensland

‘Short Stories from Suburbia’ focused on inner suburban Brisbane. Students prepared architectural ‘adjustments’ to a suburban Kindergarten and the reorganisation of a primary school campus in Holland Park.

Lectures, seminars and readings examined the broader social and cultural role of suburban schools and the civic life of suburban territories.

ARCH7022 - Masters Research Studio ‘The Architect as Custodian and Other Short Stories ...‘
School of Architecture, The University of Queensland

This research unit engaged with themes of ‘value’ and ‘meaning’ in contemporary architectural practice.

Research tasks focused on the inner-city suburbs of Brisbane and included discussion of several themes, including managing settings, small-scale identity, suburban narrative, and other observations from the research of Greg Bamford and the practice of Owen and Vokes and Peters.

Students documented local building traditions through site recording, measured drawings and compilation of photographic records.

ARCH7022 - Masters Research Studio ‘Garden Oriented Development + Small Scale Identity‘
School of Architecture, The University of Queensland

Students were asked to reflect upon the distinctive characteristics of suburban Brisbane and document events, structures and settings through the production of drawings and the compilation of photographic records that celebrate the prosaic by offering it a considered, poetic rendering.
